Poltrona Frau 2019

The 2019 armchair is based on a supporting structure of seasoned beech. The seat, backrest and armrests are sprung with double-cone steel springs, fixed by hand and placed on jute straps. The seat padding is made of rubberised horsehair, while hand-shaped vegetable fibres are used for the backrest and armrests. The seat cushion is filled with goose down and a stabilising polyurethane foam insert. The cover is made of Pelle Frau® leather and features an elaborate, hand-worked capitonné finish adorning the front of the backrest. The back of the backrest is decorated with a leather trim. The lower part of the seat is framed by a base with four feet in solid ash stained mocha. The floor supports are available either with metal foot caps in gold or matt grey, or with metal foot caps at the rear and castors at the front. The 2019 armchair is also available in a version with an oval swivel tray in solid ash with a top in chocolate-brown Saddle Extra leather, perfect for holding hi-tech devices, books or personal items. From 1919 to 2019, exactly one century later, Poltrona Frau has reinterpreted the historic leather model with capitonné workmanship while preserving its original essence. In collaboration with Roberto Lazzeroni, the armchair was carefully reconsidered and adapted to modern comfort needs. The challenge was to rethink an armchair that has accompanied the history of Poltrona Frau for over a hundred years and embodies the essence of the brand. Originally designed in 1919 as a timeless classic, the armchair was wide, robust, hand-upholstered and completely covered in leather. It was distinguished by elaborate artisanal details, including the pleated volutes of the armrests and the famous capitonné pattern on the backrest. Roberto Lazzeroni approached this design icon with great respect and dedication. He studied it at length, sat in it, touched and experienced it. In doing so, he recognised that the proportions no longer met modern demands for comfort. The 2019 armchair is therefore a contemporary reinterpretation of the original while preserving all the qualities that made it famous. It remains fascinating, refined and comfortable, ready to endure the next hundred years with calm elegance.
