Carl Hansen BM0057 Sideboard
When he designed the BM0057 sideboard in 1957, Børge Mogensen already had a broad understanding of how modern living standards were evolving. His "tree furniture" concept played a key role in revolutionising utility furniture. It explored the idea of specially designed storage furniture that could be adapted to changing needs and spaces. The result of his extensive studies, which aimed to find the ideal proportions for shelves and chests of drawers, was a whole series of modern storage solutions. The materials were meant to speak for themselves, so there are few decorative details, with the exception of the striking brass details with inward-facing screw slots that form a plain, symmetrical pattern. Behind the double doors are two adjustable shelves, offering enough space for a 12-piece lunch service. The drawers are made with pegged joints, and the side panels taper towards the top for a slender finish. The elegant legs, which flow seamlessly into the solid oak frame, raise the sideboard above floor level. This visual lightness ensures it never feels overbearing. The BM0057 sideboard is beautiful from every angle and is hand-assembled – a demanding process due to the joints, bevelled connections, double mounts and doors. The sideboard combines Mogensen's understated simplicity with elegant functionality. It is a classic example of exquisite craftsmanship and practical perfectionism that makes everyday life more pleasant.
The BM0057 is made from oak and is available in two versions: oiled or white oiled, both at the same price. The frame, doors and back panel are made from solid wood and veneer, with handles and hinges in brass. A walnut version is not available for this model.
