Carl Hansen CH621 Swivel Chair
With its almost balletic posture, the CH621 swivel chair is an elegant balance of precise ergonomics and modern aesthetics. Over his prolific career, Hans J. Wegner designed more than 500 chairs, of which only a few were swivel chairs, making the CH621 a rare and sought-after collector's piece. Alongside his deep appreciation for wood and traditional joinery, which defined his early designs, Wegner also loved working with metal. As one of the first Danish designers of the mid-century to recognise the importance of ergonomics, he worked with doctors and physiologists from the University of Copenhagen to determine the ideal seating position and lumbar support for maximum comfort. The CH621 is the first swivel chair in the Carl Hansen & Søn collection.
Relaunched by Carl Hansen & Søn, the chair features a slim, industrial-looking frame in brushed stainless steel, combined with an upholstered seat, backrest and armrests in oak. The height is adjustable via a modern gas cylinder and lever mechanism; the chair stands on five castors in stainless steel and rubber (TPE) instead of the original four. The oak is available in four finishes – soaped, lacquered, oiled or white-oiled – and the upholstery in eight fabric groups and three leather groups.
