Carl Hansen CH163 Sofa
Hans J. Wegner shows with the CH163 Sofa how even a small detail can become so significant that it turns into a distinctive feature of the piece. In this case, the enlarged cover caps on the armrests form that distinctive feature. They conceal the screws in the upper part of the characteristically shaped legs that hold the armrest upholstery to the wooden frame. The wooden cap is made larger for decorative reasons, shifted slightly backwards from the front of the legs and positioned so that its grain runs across the direction of the leg's wood grain. The sofa's solid wood frame is fixed-upholstered. The seat surface and backrest cushions are loose, softening the otherwise straight lines of the sofa. The idea of using a foam core surrounded by down for the sofa cushions gave Wegner the opportunity to bring comfortable ease to an otherwise fairly strict shape. The sofa is available as a two-seater CH162 and a three-seater CH163.
The CH163 is available in six versions: soaped oak, lacquered, oiled or white-oiled oak, as well as lacquered or oiled walnut. The cover can be chosen from eight fabric groups and three leather groups. Fabric cushions are reversible, leather cushions are not.
