THONET cantilever chair with armrests • S 53 range
A comfortable, elegant all-rounder based on the cantilever construction principle. With its continuous seat shell it offers the highest comfort, is clear in form and made to the finest Thonet quality. Its range of use extends from conference and meeting rooms, through training and seminar rooms, to the living area. The model is made in two different back heights, as a swivel chair variant, and also in a stackable version.
The S 53 cantilever chair combines a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with a continuous shell of moulded plywood and armrests of elastomer plastic. At 88 cm high, it has the lower of the two back heights in the range. It is available in two upholstery options: with mirror upholstery on the seat only, or with mirror upholstery on both seat and back. The shell comes ex works in beech I and is available for an additional charge in further stain shades, in oak, or in lightened oak; the armrests are optionally available in beech or oak. POM plastic glides and felt glides are available for an additional charge.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – precisely the surface on which you sit and lean back. The reverse of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Elastomer plastic: Elastomers are plastics that retain their shape but yield slightly under pressure. Thonet uses them for the armrests: they feel pleasantly warm to the touch – unlike bare metal – give a little when leant on, and are highly resistant to everyday use.
