THONET cantilever chair, stackable, with armrests • S 53 ST range
A comfortable, elegant all-rounder based on the cantilever construction principle. With its continuous seat shell it offers maximum comfort, has a formally clear design and is made to the highest Thonet quality standards. Its range of use extends from conference and meeting rooms, through training and seminar rooms, to the living area. The model is made in two different back heights, as a swivel chair variant, and also in a stackable version.
The S 53 ST cantilever chair combines a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with a continuous shell of moulded plywood and armrests in elastomer plastic. At 88 cm high, it has the lower of the two back heights in the range. The chairs can be stacked. Images show the non-stackable version; on the stackable model the frame is slightly bent inward at the front bottom. It is available with two types of upholstery: with mirror upholstery on the seat only, or with mirror upholstery on both seat and back. The shell comes ex works in beech I and, for a surcharge, is available in further stain tones, in oak or in lightened oak, with the armrests available in beech or oak. POM plastic glides and felt glides are available for a surcharge.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – precisely the area on which you sit and lean. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Elastomer plastic: Elastomers are plastics that retain their shape but give slightly under pressure. Thonet uses them for the armrests: they feel pleasantly warm to the touch – unlike bare metal –, yield a little when you rest your arms on them, and are very resistant to everyday use.
