Knoll International Bertoia

In 1950, Harry Bertoia first presented his wire chairs to Hans and Florence Knoll, among them a chaise longue version. This was essentially the large Diamond chair, but extended on two sides — hence the term "asymmetric" used to describe its form. At the time, production of all the Bertoia chairs was still years away from being resolved by Knoll Design and Development, so it was decided not to develop the chaise longue. Two prototypes were made. In 2003, one of them was sold by Bertoia's family, at which point Knoll gained access to the chaise longue to use as a model for reproduction. The original chaise longue was to be fitted with a continuous upholstered pad designed by Richard Schultz. The final production version offers an optional seat pad as well as the original fully upholstered option.
