Walter Knoll Ayabi Chair

The Ayabi Chair turns three-dimensionality into an event. Filigree lightness, mathematically precise lines, and surprisingly stable. The visual lightness of the chair lets the beauty of the structure come into its own. Despite its reduction, Ayabi Chair embodies a sense of security and balance. What makes it special is the weave, the way the elements interlock. Soft, flowing lines, set with mathematical precision.

The challenge in developing Ayabi was to work out the perfect shape and translate it into craftsmanship. The construction of the wire-mesh chair follows organic lines; every point is defined, every line based on precise positions.

The mix of materials, leather and steel, creates an exciting yet harmonious contrast. The insert is buttoned to the frame, so the wire weave is no longer noticeable to the person sitting. The upper side is available in Saddle or Paco leather in various colours, while the underside is always dyed black. For comfort in the seat and back, fabric cushions can simply be clipped in. The cushions are padded with a water-permeable mesh fabric and, when an outdoor-suitable fabric is chosen, are suitable for outdoor use.

The design was created together with Dai Sugasawa. The Japanese-born designer uses nature as structural architecture for his functionally and emotionally appealing designs. Ayabi Chair is the result of a five-year development process.

Note: The selection of leather hides is carried out by specialists according to strict guidelines and high inspection standards. Leather naturally has soft and firm areas of hide, which may also be processed side by side. It stretches through body heat and moisture during use. This causes waves and creases to form to a certain extent (so-called seating hollows). Favourite seating spots document this particularly clearly. This adaptation process is largely complete after a few weeks. Further stretching is minimal and inconspicuous. Depending on the tanning method, dyeing, and surface treatment, leather initially has a product-typical odour. This noticeably diminishes over the course of a few weeks. Airing can accelerate this. Walter Knoll processes several leather hides (between five and seven) for one upholstered seating group. No hide is like another. Insect bites, small injuries from fences, or fighting marks leave small scars on the cowhide, which you may rediscover in the leather. Fattening folds are a sign of the animal's health and good nutrition. These material-typical characteristics do not impair the quality of the leather furniture. Differences in sheen, colour, and structure within a hide and between the cut pieces of a cover are also characteristic and typical of leather furniture.
