In the 1960s, the shell chair set standards for a new design language and became a model for modern design. In 1969, it was awarded the first-ever Bundespreis für Gute Form (Federal Award for Good Design). To this day, the shell chair represents classic, enduringly valid design worldwide – as a solitary piece or in groups, in conference settings as well as residential ones. The Danish interior designers Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm consistently dedicated themselves to optimising shape, material and ergonomics. Walter Knoll products stand for flexible use and diverse configuration options.

The FK Chair is a swivelling shell chair with a backrest shell made of matt black plastic or with a fully leather-covered shell. The base frame is available either high-gloss polished or powder-coated in matt black. Two different base frame variants are available: a swivelling three-star cross base with plastic glides for stone and carpet floors or felt glides for wooden floors, and a swivelling five-star cross base with castors – matched to the respective floor hardness – and height adjustment.

The variant with the five-star cross base is optionally available with a Liftomatik tilt function. This allows a tilt angle of 20°. The spring tension can be individually adjusted via the lever beneath the seat. On chairs with the Liftomatik tilt function, the overall height and seat height increase slightly. The chair is available with a low or high back.

The FK Chair takes up the same iconic design language as the FK Lounge Chair. However, the latter is wider and deeper and fully upholstered.

Please note: the selection of leather hides is carried out by specialists according to strict specifications and high testing standards. Leather naturally has soft and firm areas of hide, which may also be processed alongside one another. It stretches through body heat and moisture during use. This causes waves and creases (so-called seat impressions) to a certain extent. Favourite seats document this particularly clearly. This adjustment process is largely complete after a few weeks. Any further stretching is minimal and unobtrusive. Depending on the tanning method, colouring and surface treatment, leather initially has a product-typical odour. This noticeably diminishes over the course of a few weeks. Airing can accelerate this process. Walter Knoll uses several hides for one upholstered group. No hide is identical to another. Insect bites, small injuries from fences or fighting marks leave small scars on the cowhide, which you may rediscover in the leather. Growth folds are a sign of the animal's health and good nutrition. These material-typical characteristics do not impair the quality of the leather furniture. Differences in sheen, colour and texture within a single hide and between the cut pieces of a cover are likewise characteristic and typical of leather furniture.
