The logic of the minimal defines the Shape and materials of the Cuoio Chair. Leather and steel form its skin and Frame. The leather adapts to the Body, while the backrest and lacing give flexibly and resiliently. The Cuoio Chair is available with or without Armrests – entirely in black or in natural brown tones.
The distinctive detail of the Cuoio Chair is the slits in the Backrest. They serve three functions at once: ergonomic, structural, and a defining design element. Beneath the Seat surface, lacing provides additional elastic support. Without any padding materials, this creates a minimalist, characterful yet comfortable chair. Durability and sustainability also follow from this consistent concept.
Over time, the leather develops an individual patina and gains character as a result. On the origins of the design, the designers at EOOS say: "We wanted to build our first saddle-leather chair, a chair like none that had existed before." Inspired by the minimalism of fashion designer Helmut Lang, the Viennese design team developed a chair whose Shape follows consistently from its function while still appearing poetic. Note: Leather hides are selected by specialists according to strict criteria and high quality standards. Leather naturally contains both soft and firm areas of skin, which may also be processed alongside one another. It expands through body heat and moisture during use, which can create waves and creases to a certain extent (so-called seating indentations). Favourite seating spots show this particularly clearly. This adaptation process is largely complete after a few weeks; any further stretching is minimal and unobtrusive. Depending on the tanning method, colouring, and surface treatment, leather initially has a characteristic smell, which noticeably fades over a few weeks and can be accelerated through ventilation. Walter Knoll uses several leather hides for a single upholstered piece. No two hides are alike. Insect bites, small marks from fences, or signs of tussling leave small scars on the cowhide that may be visible in the leather. Feeding folds are a sign of the animal's health and good nutrition. These material-typical characteristics do not affect the quality of the leather furniture. Differences in sheen, colour, and texture within a single hide and between the cut pieces of a cover are likewise characteristic and typical of leather furniture.
