The design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin (Industrial Facility) translates the established shape repertoire of the iconic bentwood chairs 214 and 209 into a material-efficient, stackable moulded wood chair with an ergonomic seat shell on a light tubular steel frame. On request, bentwood armrests complement the seating, which is equally suited to private and contract use and is available in various wood types and colours. The chair's design pushes the technical possibilities of moulded wood — at Thonet always a driver of innovation — to the full. The S 220 impresses with controlled organic form and precise lines, while the moulded wood shell embraces the user comfortably and supportively. The chair's elegant waist allows the seat shell to swing comfortably. Its front edge, rounded off in a flowing downward curve, sums up the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality that is characteristic of the S 220: this "waterfall edge", as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, thereby increasing seating comfort, while echoing the radii of the tubular steel base frame. The range is extended by the swivel chair variants S 220 Atelier (DRW) and the S 220 H bar stool.
The THONET S 220 FDRW is the swivel armchair of the range with wooden armrests finished in a colour similar to the shell. It stands on a five-star swivel base with castors and a tilt mechanism in powder-coated aluminium, RAL 9005 deep black; polished aluminium and chrome-plated castors are available at extra cost. The armchair has continuous height adjustment. The moulded wood shell is available in clear-lacquered or stained oak, or in clear-lacquered walnut at extra cost. It is available unupholstered or with mirror upholstery on the seat.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inner side is upholstered – exactly the area where you sit and lean back. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
