The established formal vocabulary of the iconic bentwood chairs 214 and 209 is translated by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin (Industrial Facility) into a material-efficient, stackable moulded wood chair with an ergonomic seat shell on a lightweight tubular steel frame. On request, bentwood armrests complement this seating, which is equally at home in private and contract settings and is available in various wood types and colours. The design pushes the technical possibilities of moulded wood – at Thonet always a driver of innovation – to their limits. The S 220 impresses with controlled organic form and precise lines, while the moulded wood shell embraces and supports the user comfortably. The chair's elegant waist allows the seat shell to flex comfortably. Its front edge, which curves smoothly downward, sums up the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and function that is characteristic of the S 220: this “waterfall edge”, as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, thereby increasing seating comfort, while echoing the radii of the tubular steel base frame. The programme is extended by the S 220 Atelier (DRW) swivel chair variants and the S 220 H bar stool.
The THONET S 220 DRW transfers the programme's moulded wood shell onto a five-star swivel base with castors and a tilt mechanism. The swivel base is aluminium, powder-coated RAL 9005 deep black, with polished aluminium available at extra cost; chrome-plated castors are also available at extra cost. The swivel armchair has continuous height adjustment. The shell is oak, clear-lacquered or stained, with walnut clear-lacquered available at extra cost. It is available unupholstered or with mirror upholstery on the seat.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – precisely the area where you sit and lean back. The rear of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and delicate while noticeably improving seating comfort.
