THONET chair, tubular steel chair • Programme S 361
Used thousands of times over and tested successfully under the toughest conditions: these chairs are found in exhibition halls, event venues, museums, churches, town halls and canteens. They meet every requirement for mass seating: stackable, easy to link in rows, low-maintenance and very comfortable. The special feature is the intelligent row-linking system (Thonet patent). The frames interlock without any additional parts. This system offers two economic advantages: the comfortable seat width of 58 cm has a row pitch of just 53 cm, so more chairs fit in a given space, and handling is so simple that set-up and take-down times are significantly reduced.
The THONET S 361 is the version of the programme with seat and back in moulded plywood. The chrome-plated four-legged Frame in tubular steel carries armrest pads in elastomer plastic; the chair is stackable and can be linked in rows. The surface finish is beech I; further beech II stain shades are available at extra cost. Plastic Glides are included, felt Glides available at extra cost. The chair is available unupholstered, with mirror upholstery on the seat, or with mirror upholstery on seat and back; for the upholstered versions, a moisture-protection film for the seat is available at extra cost.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inner side is upholstered – precisely the area where you sit and lean back. The rear of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while still gaining noticeable seating comfort.
Elastomer plastic: Elastomers are plastics that keep their shape but yield slightly under pressure. Thonet uses them for the armrest pads: they feel pleasantly warm to the touch – unlike bare metal – give a little when leaned on, and are very resistant to daily use.
Row linking: Chairs designed for row linking can be joined side by side into fixed rows without tools. This is required wherever many people sit together: in halls, churches, canteens or conference rooms. The Thonet connection is patented and meets DIN EN 14703 for row seating, including panic-release safety – in an emergency, the row can be cleared quickly and safely.
