THONET chair • S 166 range
Elegant, comfortable and available in a wide range of versions: the S 160 range was developed for furnishing event spaces, canteens and residential-style contract areas. The chairs can be stacked closely (up to 17 units) and feature a connecting mechanism that links them together simply, securely, space-savingly and without tools (Thonet patent). With a low or high backrest and various upholstery options, the S 160 offers a broad range of applications. A variant with wooden chair legs (160) turns the popular multi-purpose chair into a residential-style chair for contract use, for example in comfortably furnished cafés. There is also a delicate and particularly comfortable bar stool (S 160 H) for the hospitality sector and for working at high tables.
The THONET S 166 chair stands on a chrome-plated four-legged frame made of tubular steel and carries a moulded plywood seat shell with lumbar support. It is available unupholstered, with mirror upholstery on the seat, mirror upholstery on seat and back, and full upholstery. It is stackable and can be linked into rows, so chairs can be connected into rows without tools. Plastic glides are included as standard; felt glides are available for an additional charge, as are further beech II stain shades.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inner side is upholstered – precisely the surface you sit and lean on. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and delicate while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Full upholstery: With full upholstery, the seat shell is covered all round with fabric or leather, including the back. The wood surface is then no longer visible. This makes the chair appear softer, calmer and more residential in character than the mirror-upholstered version.
Lumbar support: The lumbar support is a targeted contouring of the backrest at the level of the lumbar vertebrae. It supports the lower back exactly where it has its natural curve, relieving it during extended periods of sitting – without the need for additional mechanisms or adjustments.
Row connection: Chairs that can be linked into rows can be connected side by side into fixed rows of seating without tools. This is required wherever many people sit together: in halls, churches, canteens or conference rooms. The Thonet connection is patented and complies with the DIN EN 14703 standard for row seating, including panic-release safety – in an emergency, the row can be cleared quickly and safely.
