The outstanding qualities of this armchair are elegance, timelessness and a high level of seating comfort. Added to that is a lightness that only a cantilever model can offer. While the first tubular steel chairs of the 1920s had hardly any upholstery, the Thonet catalogue of 1935 already featured an entire series of generously upholstered armchairs and sofas. It is likely that Thonet's own design of the S 411, from 1932, marked the beginning of this new product range. Today it is made with high-quality spring-core upholstery. A matching footstool is also available.
The S 412 is the version with a high backrest: an overall height of 89 cm compared with 79 cm for the S 411. Its frame of chrome-plated tubular steel carries a seat with spring core and full upholstery, with piping encased in the cover material; for nubuck leather the seam is finished as a colour-contrasting welt seam, and for natural nappa leather as a colour-contrasting double top-stitched seam. The armrests are made of beech, or of oiled oak or walnut for an additional charge. The frame is also available powder-coated for an additional charge; cantilever models are made without glides as standard, with POM plastic or felt glides available for an additional charge. The programme also includes the S 411 and the matching footstool S 411 H.

Full upholstery: With full upholstery, the seat shell is covered all round with fabric or leather, including the back. The wood surface is then no longer visible. This gives the chair a softer, calmer and more homely look than with mirror upholstery.
