Carl Hansen KK47000 Safari Chair
The KK47000 Safari Chair by Kaare Klint is a refinement of the chairs an American cameraman and his wife brought back from an African safari. Klint noticed them in photographs of the couple. They were most likely based on the Indian Roorkhee Chairs of the British military — perhaps the earliest examples of self-assembled furniture. The original required no tools, was unglued and cleverly constructed: for greater strength and stability, the joints tightened as soon as someone sat down in the chair. Klint wanted to simplify the lounge chair, giving it a clearer design and refining it. The final Safari Chair was exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition in 1933, with its British predecessor serving as inspiration. Klint's chair impresses with its systematic approach, first-class craftsmanship, well-considered proportions and remarkable material effects.
The frame of the Safari Chair is made of solid ash, white-oiled. The seat and backrest are available either in cotton canvas natural (100% linen) or in semi-aniline leather Thor from leather group B — leather is available in the colours Thor 301, 325 and 332; the armrests are in natural saddle leather. A foam cushion with a canvas or leather cover is included; an additional cushion (CU KK47000) can be ordered separately in canvas natural or leather Thor. Carl Hansen & Søn offers the matching KK97170 footstool as a separate product.
