As if Marcel Breuer had foreseen home offices and mobile computers of our time: his compact tubular steel desk is an elegant companion for the current style of living and working. Designed for Thonet, the desk is a fine example of the Bauhaus's programmatic aim to unite art and technology in a new whole. As a trained cabinetmaker, Breuer combined his knowledge of tubular steel with his experience in interior design. Table top and storage elements in lacquered or stained wood fit harmoniously into the frame of bent tubular steel. The load-bearing frame consists of a curved line, within which the wooden elements, shaped in clear forms, appear to float. Balanced in its proportions, the piece embodies a significant chapter of contemporary history, known as "Neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity). Thonet still manufactures various versions of this striking model today.
At 178 cm wide and 106 kg, the S 285/5 is the largest version in the programme. It is available in one configuration: two large bodies. Their drawers run on full extension with soft-close; a cross-divider is available for the small drawer at extra cost. Table top and elements are chipboard with real wood veneer and are chosen independently of the frame: the wood in beech, ash, oak or walnut, alternatively with opaque lacquer finish, the frame chrome-plated or powder-coated.
