As if Marcel Breuer had anticipated home offices and mobile computers: his compact tubular-steel desk is an elegant companion for today's lifestyle and way of working. Designed for Thonet, the desk is a fine example of the Bauhaus's programmatic ambition to unite art and technology in a new whole. Trained as a joiner, Breuer combined his knowledge of tubular steel with his experience in interior design. The Table top and storage elements in lacquered or stained wood fit harmoniously into the frame of curved tubular steel. The supporting Frame consists of a single sweeping line, within which the wooden elements, defined by clear shapes, appear to float. Balanced in its proportions, the piece embodies an important chapter of contemporary history, known as "Die neue Sachlichkeit" (New Objectivity). Thonet still manufactures various versions of this distinctive model today.
The S 285/0 is the narrow base Version of the programme: 121 cm wide, 76 cm deep and 73 cm high, without body and without shelves. A Table top of chipboard with real wood veneer rests on the frame of curved tubular steel. The top and Frame are selected independently of one another: the wood in beech, ash, oak or walnut, or alternatively with an opaque lacquer finish; the Frame chrome-plated or powder-coated. As standard, the desk is supplied without Glides; plastic or felt Glides and the ThonetClip® cable clip are available at extra cost. The versions with storage elements are called S 285, S 285/1, S 285/2 and S 285/5.
