THONET stool • S 35 NH range
With lightness, mobility and comfort, this chair outshines all the heavier, more static cantilever designs of the Bauhaus era. In 1930, the modern outlook on life conveyed by the S 35 seemed visionary; today it is part of our mobile, individual way of living. With the S 35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in constructing all the functions of a free-swinging tubular steel chair in a single continuous line that also incorporates the armrests. Breuer's design achieved a double cantilever effect: the seat and armrests flex independently of one another. The swinging motion of the rearward-projecting seat and back frame is balanced by the flexing armrests. For added comfort, there is a matching footstool – likewise built as a cantilever design. The comfortable club chair S 35 was first shown in 1930 during the now-famous presentation of the Deutscher Werkbund at the "Salon des Artistes Décorateurs" in Paris. There it formed part of the furnishings of a prototype high-rise apartment that Breuer realised together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
The THONET S 35 NH stool complements the S 35 N chair and, like the chair, is suitable for outdoor use. The tubular steel frame is powder-coated, and the seat surface consists of plastic mesh fabric. Plastic glides are included. The stool measures 55 x 66 cm at a height of 37 cm and weighs 6 kg. The matching cushion pad S 35 PAH is also available.
