THONET stool • S 35 LH range
With lightness, mobility and comfort, this armchair puts every heavy, sluggish cantilever chair of the Bauhaus era in the shade. In 1930, the modern lifestyle conveyed by the S 35 seemed visionary; today it is part of our mobile, individual way of living. With the S 35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in constructing all the functions of a freely cantilevered tubular steel armchair in a single continuous line that also incorporates the armrests. With this design, Breuer achieved a double cantilever effect: the seat and armrests flex independently of one another. The swinging motion of the rearward-projecting seat and back frame is balanced by the springy armrests. For added comfort, there is a matching footstool, also of cantilever construction. The comfortable S 35 club chair was first shown in 1930 at the now-famous presentation by the Deutscher Werkbund at the "Salon des Artistes Décorateurs" in Paris. There, it formed part of the furnishings of a prototype high-rise apartment realised by Breuer together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
Like its matching club chair, the THONET S 35 LH stool has a cantilever construction made of chrome-plated tubular steel. It is offered with the same two coverings: core leather, or buffalo leather at an extra charge, or cowhide. The stool is 37 cm high and weighs 7 kg. In the cowhide version, the stool is one centimetre wider. Plastic and felt glides are available at an extra charge.
