THONET chair, cantilever • S 533 range
Technology becomes furniture, a striking invention becomes an elegant furnishing piece. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was the first to give the cantilever chair aesthetic lightness, relating it to the surrounding space through sweeping lines. In the run-up to the Weissenhof Estate exhibition, which he organised, Mies van der Rohe learned of the cantilever chair principle through Mart Stam. As novel as this approach was, Mies van der Rohe was not convinced by Stam's first realisation of it. He promptly responded to the technological innovation with his own aesthetic solution, which he presented in 1927. The S 533 is one of the first cantilever chairs, and at the same time defines the space around it with the elegantly curved, large circular form of its tubular steel. Deliberate restraint in the use of materials, elegance in its lines, and transparency in effect are the defining characteristics of the S 533. Its particular comfort is owed to the frame's permanently elastic spring action. While most designs from the 1920s emphasised functional aspects through simplicity, this chair carries the architect's distinct signature: Mies van der Rohe's deliberately luxurious design combines functionality, comfort and timeless aesthetics. The S 533 represents a shifted perception of quality.
The THONET S 533 cantilever chair has a chrome-plated tubular steel frame without armrests. The upholstery is available as a choice of plastic mesh fabric on seat and back, cane weave, or full-grain leather; full-grain leather is also available laced at an additional cost. For the plastic mesh fabric version, the frame can be supplied powder-coated at an additional cost, in either a standard or outdoor version. Glides in POM plastic or hard felt are available at an additional cost. The range is complemented by the S 533 F cantilever chair with armrests.
