THONET chair • S 168 range
Elegant, comfortable and available in a variety of versions: the S 160 range was developed for furnishing event spaces, canteens and residential-style contract areas. The chairs can be stacked closely (up to 17 units) and feature a connecting mechanism that links them together easily, securely, space-savingly and without tools (Thonet patent). With a low or high back and a range of upholstery options, the S 160 offers a broad range of applications. A variant with wooden chair legs (160) turns the popular multi-purpose chair into a residential-style chair for the contract sector, for example for cafés with a homely feel. There is also a delicate and particularly comfortable bar stool (S 160 H) for the hospitality sector and for working at high tables.
The THONET S 168 chair stands on a chrome-plated four-legged frame made of tubular steel and carries a moulded plywood seat shell with lumbar support. It is offered in unupholstered, seat-only mirror upholstery, seat-and-back mirror upholstery, and full upholstery versions. It is stackable and can be linked in rows, meaning it can be connected into chair rows without tools. Plastic glides are included as standard, felt glides are available at extra cost, and additional beech II stains are also available at extra cost.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inner side is upholstered – precisely the area where you sit and lean back. The reverse of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and delicate while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Full upholstery: With full upholstery, the seat shell is covered all round in fabric or leather, including the reverse side. The wood surface is then no longer visible. This gives the chair a softer, calmer and more homely look than the mirror upholstery version.
Lumbar support: The lumbar support is a targeted contouring of the backrest at the level of the lumbar vertebrae. It supports the lower back exactly where it has its natural curve, relieving strain during longer periods of sitting – without the need for additional mechanisms or adjustments.
Row connection: Chairs that can be linked in rows can be joined side by side into fixed chair rows without tools. This is required wherever large numbers of people sit together: in halls, churches, canteens or conference rooms. The Thonet connection is patented and meets the DIN EN 14703 standard for row seating, including panic-release safety – in an emergency, the row can be cleared quickly and safely.
