THONET cantilever chair with armrests • S 533 F range
Technology becomes furniture; a striking invention becomes an elegant piece of interior design. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was the first to give the cantilever chair aesthetic lightness, relating it to the space around it through sweeping lines. In preparation for the Weissenhof Estate exhibition he organised, Mies van der Rohe learned the principle of the cantilever chair from Mart Stam. As novel as this approach was, Mies van der Rohe was unconvinced by Stam's first realisation of it. He promptly responded to the technological innovation with an aesthetic solution of his own, which he presented in 1927. The S 533 is one of the first cantilever chairs, and with the elegantly curved, large circular form of its tubular steel, it defines the space surrounding it. Deliberate restraint in the use of materials, elegance in the lines and transparency in effect are the characteristic qualities of the S 533. Its distinctive comfort comes from the frame's ability to flex permanently and elastically. While most designs of the 1920s emphasised functional aspects through simplicity, this chair carries the architect's signature: Mies van der Rohe's deliberately luxurious design combines functionality, comfort and timeless aesthetics. The S 533 represents a changed perception of quality.
The THONET S 533 F cantilever chair is the version with armrests. The chrome-plated tubular steel frame carries upholstery in synthetic mesh fabric, cane weave or core leather; core leather is also available laced at an additional cost. The armrests are made from elastomer plastic, cane weave or core leather, matching the chosen upholstery. Glides in POM plastic or hard felt are available at an additional cost. Compared with the S 533 without armrests, this chair is five centimetres wider and seven centimetres deeper.
