THONET armchair • S 35 N range
With lightness, mobility and comfort, this armchair outshines all that is heavy and static among the cantilever chairs of the Bauhaus era. In 1930, the modern lifestyle conveyed by the S 35 seemed visionary; today it is part of our mobile, individual way of life. With the S 35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in combining all the functions of a cantilevered tubular steel chair into a single continuous line that also incorporates the armrests. Breuer's design achieved a double cantilever effect: the seat and armrests flex independently of one another. The swinging motion of the rearward-projecting seat and back frame is balanced by the flexible armrests. For added comfort, a matching footstool is available – also of cantilever construction. The comfortable club chair S 35 was first shown in 1930 at the now-famous presentation by the Deutscher Werkbund at the "Salon des Artistes Décorateurs" in Paris. There it formed part of the furnishings of a prototype high-rise apartment realised by Breuer together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
The THONET S 35 N armchair adopts the cantilever construction of the club chair and is suitable for outdoor use. Its tubular steel frame is powder-coated, the seat and back are made of plastic mesh fabric, and the armrests are of iroko. Plastic glides are included. The armchair stands 84 cm high, with the seat surface at 36 cm and the armrests at 55 cm. The matching cushion pad S 35 PA and footstool S 35 NH are also available.
