With lightness, mobility and comfort, this armchair outshines all heaviness and inertia among the cantilever chairs of the Bauhaus era. In 1930, the modern outlook conveyed by the S 35 seemed visionary; today it forms part of our mobile and individual way of life. With the S 35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in constructing all the functions of a free-swinging tubular steel armchair in a single continuous line that also incorporates the armrests. Breuer's design achieved a double cantilever effect: the seat and armrests flex independently of one another. The swinging motion of the rearward-projecting seat and back frame is balanced by the flexing armrests. For added comfort, a matching footstool is available – also constructed as a cantilever piece. The comfortable club chair S 35 was first shown in 1930 at the now-famous presentation by the Deutscher Werkbund at the "Salon des Artistes Décorateurs" in Paris. There it formed part of the furnishings of a prototype high-rise apartment realised by Breuer together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
The THONET S 35 club chair rests on a chrome-plated tubular steel frame, its continuous line spanning seat, back and armrests. The armrests are made of beech and are also available, for an additional charge, in oiled or clear-lacquered walnut. Two versions are available for the upholstery: core leather, also available as buffalo leather for an additional charge, or cowhide. Both versions sit at a height of 37 cm, with the armrests at 55 cm. Plastic and felt glides are available for an additional charge. The armchair is complemented by the equally cantilevered S 35 LH stool, as well as by the S 35 N and S 35 NH models suitable for outdoor use.
