The bentwood technique perfected by Michael Thonet was one of the sources of inspiration for Marcel Breuer's experiments with bent tubular steel. This idea gave rise to the four-part nesting table set B 9. The small tables can be used in many ways – as a side table in seating groups, as a practical surface, or as the perfect spot for a vase of fresh flowers. After use, they can be pushed together to save space. The distinctive feature of this programme lies in its functional simplicity – the nesting tables consist solely of chrome-plated, bent tubular steel and rectangular tops. During his time at the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer experimented with steel and tubular steel, a promising material that was new to furniture-making at the time. Close collaboration with the aircraft manufacturer Junkers in Dessau accelerated the development process. Among his first designs were the B 9 nesting tables as well as various shelves and side furniture. The Thonet card-index catalogue of 1930/31 already contained the complete range. Breuer originally designed the B 9 nesting tables for the canteen of the Dessau Bauhaus building. The versatile little tables were also used in the student apartments and the Masters' Houses of Walter Gropius.
The B 9 d/1 has the dimensions of the largest nesting table, the B 9 d, and is additionally fitted with a shelf. Its frame consists of chrome-plated tubular steel with a diameter of 20 mm, and the tops are 20 mm thick, measuring 34.5 x 55 cm. The table top is only available in MDF. The surface is executed in Beech I; ash and gloss lacquer finishes are available at extra cost, as are plastic or felt glides and the ThonetClip® cable clip. At a height of 60 cm, the table weighs 9 kg.
