To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the designer's birth, the classic Side Chair is presented in a new version at the Salone del Mobile 2015, with a chromed tubular steel structure and a polypropylene seat in various colours, in a special "anniversary edition". A modern, colourful interpretation of an unmistakable creation that faithfully reproduces its unique, linear design. The new chair is distinguished by its extremely comfortable seat and its adaptability to a wide range of contexts, from private living areas through to commercial spaces. The stool is also available in this new version.
In 1950 Hans and Florence Knoll offered the sculptor Harry Bertoia the opportunity to bring his artistic concepts freely into the creation of a chair for their collection, which was still in its early stages. "We decided to let him work in complete freedom, so as not to hinder the creativity that already distinguished him at that time in the panorama of designers", Florence Knoll recalled. Bertoia, constantly in search of perfection, worked by hand and tried out many variations, with the aim of shaping space while using a light, airy structure. Thanks to an almost artistic process, various seating pieces were created, from the Side Chair and the stool for the dining area to the Diamond and Large Diamond armchairs, through to the lounge model, the Bird Chair, and the Asymmetric model. Each had its own natural and sculptural form. The Bertoia collection (1952) is still available in a wide range of covers that perfectly suit the innovative furniture Harry Bertoia designed with such skill and artistic intelligence.
- Frame and basket: welded steel wire, high-gloss, satin chrome-plated, bronze lacquered or with a Rilsan coating, a very durable fused nylon dip finish. Scratch-resistant, does not flake off and is chemical-resistant. Connections in stainless steel.
- Glides: black plastic glides on the chair. Note: the "Knoll" logo is embossed into the chair frame.
- The chair has no upholstery, no integrated seat cushion and no plastic seat shell. Seat cushion optionally available.
