The Relax series does not differ visually from the standard model. The Relax version is fitted with an even softer seat cushion and leather and therefore offers even more comfort.
As a rising figure of the modernist movement, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was chosen to design the pavilion of the Weimar Republic for the industrial exhibition in Barcelona in 1929. Through masterly proportioning and planning, Mies created a rhythmic and entirely novel space that raised industrial materials to a level of grace never achieved before. Inside, Mies designed chairs and stools intended as a resting place for the King and Queen of Spain. Determined to create a royal chair, Mies is believed to have based the designs, with their characteristic lattice frames, on the field chairs of ancient Rome. In 1953 Mies formally granted Knoll the production rights for the Barcelona Chair and the stool. The designs immediately became a hallmark of the Knoll brand and have been made to Mies van der Rohe's exacting standards ever since.
- Flat spring steel, high-gloss chrome-plated and mirror-polished by hand. The cowhide core leather straps are fixed with aluminium rivets.
- For cushion covers in Venezia leather or black leather, the straps are dyed in the colour of the leather; for all other leather upholstery, the straps are covered in the respective leather. An armchair requires 17 core leather straps, a stool requires 7.
- Cowhide core leather straps: on the visible side the cowhide core leather straps are covered in the respective leather. The invisible side facing the back cushion is in the natural colour.
- 40 individual leather rectangles for the armchair, 16 for the stool, are cut by hand and hand-sewn with piping from a single hide. The cushions are fitted with foam of varying density and polyester fleece for excellent seating comfort. The leather is of the highest quality. The seat and back cushions are connected by a removable pin, and in addition the seat cushion is secured to the frame with small leather straps.
