Ribs, parasol hubs and pole are made of solid teak and are surface-impregnated. (Hubs and pole are glued waterproof in several layers; this laminated-timber quality gives high strength.) The teak frame ensures extreme durability with regard to weathering and rot. Teak owes its outstanding weather resistance and its appearance to a wide variety of constituents, whose natural exudation can cause discolouration on the covers. The film fitted between frame and cover for transport is removed before first use. The covers are made of acrylic fabric (100% acrylic weave) and are generally produced with what is known as an air vent hood. These fabrics are impregnated to be water-repellent and rot-inhibiting. Absolute impermeability to water in persistent rain cannot, however, be guaranteed.
