The round Saarinen side and coffee table from Knoll International belongs to an entire family of coffee, dining and side tables that Eero Saarinen designed for Knoll in the 1950s. The impetus for the so-called Pedestal Collection, which also produced the well-known Tulip Chair, was Saarinen's dislike of the tangle of chair and table legs that he found disruptive in any room. He replaced the usual four legs with a single, column-shaped foot, giving his furniture a calm and balance that had not existed before. What was considered a sensation at the time is now the unmistakable hallmark of the Saarinen tables. The foot and top merge into one another so seamlessly that a closed, softly drawn silhouette is created. Together with the fine materials of the table top, the round side and coffee table becomes an elegant, decorative companion for a sophisticated living room.
A foot made of heavy cast aluminium carries the top on a curved column; the floor beneath the table remains clear, and chairs can be pushed up to it from any side. White and black feet are coated with Rilsan, a fused nylon layer that is scratch-resistant and does not chip. The tops have bevelled edges and are made of Laminate, Veneer or marble. Marble is available coated with transparent polyester so that everyday stains do not penetrate the stone, with a satin finish, or left untreated for Arabescato and Statuarietto. Marble tops are 2 cm thick, Laminate and Veneer tops 3 cm, so the table stands 1 cm lower with marble. The top and foot are delivered packed separately. The "Knoll" logo sits on the underside of the table top, with a nameplate bearing the "Knoll Studio" logo and Saarinen's signature beneath the top.
The round side and coffee tables are the smaller tables of the collection: a side table with a 41 cm diameter at 52 cm height, two tables with a 51 cm diameter at coffee table height of 37 cm or side table height of 52 cm, and a coffee table with a 91 cm diameter at 39 cm height. All four stand on the same foot in white or black; the top is chosen from Laminate, Fenix, Veneer or marble.
