With the Pedestal Collection, Eero Saarinen vowed to do away with the "slum of legs" found beneath chairs and tables with four legs. He began with hundreds of drawings, followed by ¼-scale models. Since the compelling idea was to design chairs that look good in a room, the model furniture was set up in a to-scale model room the size of a doll’s house.
Saarinen drew on his early training as a sculptor and refined his design through full-scale models, endlessly modifying the form in clay. "What interests me is when and where these structural plastic forms should be used. If you go deeper into the various possibilities, you find many different forms that are equally logical - some ugly, some exciting, some earthbound, some floating. The choice really becomes a sculptor’s choice."
Saarinen was supported by Don Petitt of Knoll’s Design Development Group, who introduced several clever methods of making models. Together with a research team from Knoll, the problems arising in production were solved. Full-scale models became furniture, and with family and friends as "guinea pigs" the furniture was tested in the dining room and living room of the Saarinen house in Bloomfield Hills.
- Frame: original design by Saarinen. Heavy cast aluminium. Black and white pedestal bases are protected with Rilsan.
- Table tops: smooth laminate, acrylic stone, marble or veneer with bevelled edges. Marble with a transparent polyester coating to prevent staining through use.
- Acrylic stone is a solid material made of aluminium hydroxide, acrylic resin and natural pigments. The aluminium hydroxide gives the product particular strength; the quality of the acrylic resin ensures that the table stays clean and is therefore suitable for contact with food; high water resistance and service life (suitable for outdoor use).
- There is a 1 cm difference in height between the laminate and wood tables and the acrylic stone and marble tops; it results from the thickness of the table tops. Marble/acrylic stone = 2 cm thick, laminate/veneer table top = 3 cm thick.
- Shipping: the top and the pedestal base are shipped in separate packaging.
- Note: the "Knoll" logo is on the underside of the table. A nameplate with the "Knoll Studio" logo and the designer’s signature is likewise located under the table top or the bearing surface of the table top.
