With his experience at the firm of Eero Saarinen and Associates, it is not surprising that responsibility for designing the second generation of pedestal and wire furniture fell on the creative shoulders of Warren Platner. As an expression of a dramatic shift in cultural values, modernism became more expressive in the 1960s. Platner saw the opportunity to merge the competing aesthetics of the time.
"I began to think about what I really envisaged in furniture, and specifically in a chair. I started with the philosophy that it would not be aggressively technological or craft-based... I, as a designer, found room for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in styles such as Louis XV, but it could have a more rational basis rather than being applied decoration... I thought, why separate the support from the object? Just make it a whole. It starts at the floor, comes up and envelops me, supports me... What I wanted to achieve was a chair that first suited the person sitting in it, or the person in the space between the wall and the chair - what the chair did for the person in relation to the size of the person and the space."
- Frame: unique forms created by vertical steel rods welded to horizontal, circular framing rods. Nickel-plated, with a clear protective lacquer. Floor protection by a soft, transparent plastic profile, or bronze, metallic, lacquered or plated with 18k gold.
- Upholstery: moulded fibreglass shell with foam cushion filling. Seat cushion with latex filling and zipped cover, attached to the seat with Velcro.
