As head of Knoll’s planning department, Florence Knoll always approached furniture design with an eye on the larger space. For her, what mattered most was how a piece of furniture fitted into the overall design – the room, the floor, the building. Every element of a room planned by Knoll supported the overall design and complemented the existing architecture. Never willing to compromise, Florence often designed furniture when she “needed the piece for a commission and it was not available“. And although she never regarded herself as a furniture designer, her pursuit of harmony in space and consistency in design led her to design several of Knoll’s most iconic pieces – all plain, but by no means simple.
While skyscrapers rose across America in the post-war period, Florence Knoll saw it as her task to transfer the language and the reasoning of modern architecture to the interior of the corporate office. Unlike Saarinen and Bertoia, her designs were therefore based on an architectural foundation rather than on sculpture. She pared back the rhythm and the detail of modern architecture while making it more human through colour and texture. Her lounge collection, which she designed in 1954, is a perfect example of her restrained, geometric approach to furniture, clearly derived from her preferred mentor, Mies van der Rohe.
- Frame: square metal structure with visible frame and legs. Heavy square steel profile in a polished finish.
- Upholstery: seat suspension of varying strength. Seat and back cushions are fitted with foam of different densities and polyester fleece for excellent seating comfort. The leather cushions are quilted and, in the leather version, fixed with buttons; in fabric without buttons.
- Note: the Knoll Studio logo and the Florence Knoll signature are embossed in the frame.
