Narrow, elongated side tables like the B 10 are the ideal spot to put things down quickly – and find them again. At the same time, they are a decorative eye-catcher in the home and office. Today, their clean-lined aesthetic feels familiar to us. Yet its inventor, Marcel Breuer, once used his elegant, reduced furniture made of tubular steel to push back against the ornate, over-decorated living styles still widespread around 1920. After initial experiments with tubular steel, then a new material, Marcel Breuer developed a series of small tables, including the long, narrow B 10 side table. At the same time, he was working on designs for a new type of chair. Only cold-bent tubular steel, with its stable yet elastic properties, made such constructions possible. The first furniture made from tubular steel had legs and runners and did not yet make use of the spring effect of the tube. From 1928, Breuer built prototypes of what are now the famous cantilever chairs. The model for these had been provided by Mart Stam with his cantilever chair made of ten equal-length tube sections and flanges, which was initially rigid and immovable. Breuer's designs are regarded as milestones in the history of modern furniture. Thonet recognised the potential of tubular steel furniture early on, collaborated with the avant-garde among designers, and rose in the 1930s to become the world's largest producer of tubular steel furniture.
The THONET B 10 side table is 130 cm long, 39 cm deep and 50 cm high. Its frame is made of chrome-plated tubular steel, and the 20 mm thick top measures 34.5 x 119 cm. As standard, the top is made in Beech I; for an extra charge, the stained tones of Beech II, clear-lacquered ash, or open-pore lacquered ash in pure white or tomato red are available. The frame is also available powder-coated for an extra charge. The version with a shelf gains a second storage surface and weighs 16 kg instead of 10 kg. As standard, the table comes without glides; plastic or felt glides and the ThonetClip® cable clip are available for an extra charge.
