Whether as an elegant companion in the private living area and dining room, or as a serving piece in upmarket hospitality: the reissued S 179 bar cart, based on a 1930s design by legendary architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is a mobile, versatile piece of furniture made of chrome-plated tubular steel, its form derived directly from its function. A continuously bent, centrally positioned tubular steel element forms the load-bearing structure of this filigree construction. The cart rests on three points – on two wheels and on the front knee of the frame. The two aluminium wheel discs, each fitted with a rubber ring, are connected to the frame via an axle tube. The timeless piece is moved by lifting it at the black full-grain leather handle bearing the Thonet logo. Two shelves in grey-tinted clear glass provide space for glasses, bottles and bar accessories – or books, vases and other decorative objects. The glass shelves are held in a frame of chrome-plated flat steel. The rail above the lower shelf is a new addition, added to hold bottles more securely and prevent them from tipping over. Compared with Mies van der Rohe's original design, the reissue has also been scaled up slightly to adapt the bar cart's use to today's living conditions.
Thonet X Tanqueray: for this edition, Sebastian Herkner reinterprets Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's 1930s design, combining it with the colours and materials of the well-known Tanqueray bottle. The original's classically understated chrome frame is given new appeal in this edition through fluted glass in London green, mirrored surfaces and detail elements such as the iconic Tanqueray seal stamp on the high-quality leather handle.
The THONET S 179 bar cart is 40 cm wide, 97 cm deep and 78 cm high, and weighs 24 kg. The frame is made of chrome-plated tubular steel, with two shelves holding glasses, bottles and bar accessories. In the clear glass grey version, the shelves are made of grey-tinted clear glass, with a black full-grain leather handle bearing the THONET logo. The Tanqueray edition features fluted glass in London green and mirrors, along with a green full-grain leather handle embossed with the Tanqueray mark. Both versions run on two wheels.
