THONET cushion pad • S 33 PA range
Cubic shape, clear form, fine proportions, a swinging movement: the evolutionarily perfected cantilever chairs S 33 and S 34, among the first of their kind, unite the spirit of their time with an awareness of tradition. "Why four legs, when two are enough," wrote the artist Kurt Schwitters in 1927, upon seeing the first cantilever chairs in furniture history. The two chairs S 33 and S 34 caused a great stir at the Werkbund exhibition that opened in 1927 at the Weissenhof estate in Stuttgart. From 1925, Mart Stam had experimented with thin gas pipes, initially joining their angles with the flanges used by plumbers. As a further development, Stam created the principle of cantilevered chairs that no longer rested on four legs — a design principle whose formal restraint became an important building block in the history of modern furniture design. His cantilever chairs S 33 and S 34 were more than just functionally designed pieces of furniture; they were part of the revolutionary overall concept of a new approach to architecture and living.
The THONET S 33 PA cushion pad complements the S 33 and S 34 N cantilever chairs in their outdoor version. It is available as a seat cushion and as a back cushion, each in three colours.
