Carl Hansen CH07 Shell Chair
When Hans J. Wegner presented the design of the CH07 Shell Chair in 1963, many critics were enthusiastic about the chair's avant-garde look. The general public, however, was hesitant to accept its distinctive expression. Mixed reviews in the 1960s, combined with the less refined production techniques of the time, meant the Shell Chair was only ever produced in a very limited run. When Carl Hansen & Søn reintroduced the Shell Chair in 1998, it almost immediately attracted widespread public attention thanks to the interest of a new generation. The design's floating lightness is achieved through the wing-like seat and curved backrest, held by a frame with three curved legs. The chair's characteristic seat and backrest are made of upholstered, moulded veneer that conforms to the user and provides generous comfort. The chair's laminated legs are made from several layers of veneer. The two front legs are crafted from a single element, giving the chair a unique and stable shape. The Shell Chair is a clear manifestation of Wegner's belief that a chair must always be comfortable, have no bad side, and be attractive to look at from every angle.
The CH07 has a seat and backrest made of moulded veneer with foam upholstery and laminated legs made from several layers of veneer. It is available in oak with clear lacquer, oiled, white-oiled or black lacquer finishes, in walnut with clear lacquer or oiled finishes, and in beech lacquered in colour in the nine CHS Soft Colors. Lacquered oak shows a clearly visible wood grain and is available in black with a gloss level of 20 (NCS S9000-N); beech has only a minimal grain and is lacquered in all CHS colours with a gloss level of 5 (soft). The cover is available in fabric classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 12, in leather classes A, B and C, and in cowhide (leather class G).
