Minimalist and honest, yet elegant and delicate: the 118 is a classic wooden chair that lends subtle elegance to any dining table or restaurant. The principle of reducing a chair to as few components as possible was introduced by Michael Thonet back in the mid-19th century. The 118 chair is a further development that honours the company's heritage – and takes it one step further. Sebastian Herkner adds refined details that make the design less dominant, yet all the more refined. Another distinctive feature is the shape of the chair legs: rounded on the outside, straight on the inside – a shape that echoes the horseshoe-shaped seat base. The seat frame, bent from a single piece, and the hand-worked seat surface strung with cane weave both reference the archetype of a Thonet bentwood chair, the 214. The programme is extended by the 118 H bar stool. The 118 FV model completes the seating family as a comfortable, inviting armchair. It is more generous and even more comfortable: with a larger seat surface and a wider backrest angled slightly further back, it was designed by Sebastian Herkner for fine dining.
The THONET 118 HT is the counter-height version of the solid wood chair: seat height 65 cm, chrome-plated footrest. It is available in three seat versions – with a hand-woven cane weave seat (118 HT), with a shell seat in moulded plywood (118 MHT), or with a mirror-upholstered seat (118 SPHT). The wood is available in six stain shades, and for the 118 HT and 118 SPHT also in six high-gloss finishes at extra cost.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – exactly the surface where you sit and lean back. The rear of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and delicate while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Shell seat: The shell seat is a seat surface made of moulded plywood that is slightly recessed towards the centre rather than flat. This means you sit somewhat within the surface rather than just on it: the weight is distributed better, and you don't slide forward. More comfortable than a flat wooden board – and entirely without padding. The model name reflects this with an "M", for example in 214 M or 118 M.
