Carl Hansen CH24 Wishbone Chair
The very first model Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949 was the CH24, or Wishbone Chair, which has been in continuous production since its launch in 1950. With its wholly distinctive Shape, Hans J. Wegner's legendary CH24 Wishbone Chair holds a special place in the world of modern design. When designing the CH24, Wegner chose to combine the Backrest and Armrest in a single piece. To give the steam-bent top section stability and ensure comfortable seating, Wegner developed the characteristic Y-shaped Backrest after which the Wishbone Chair is named. Making a Wishbone Chair requires more than 100 different steps, most of which are still carried out by hand. The hand-woven Seat surface alone takes a skilled craftsman around an hour to complete, using approx. 120 metres of paper cord. The impressive durability and strength of the paper cord makes the chair both sturdy and long-lasting. The Wishbone Chair offers comfort and stability, and meets every aesthetic demand for a distinctive, elegant Shape. Over the years, the Wishbone Chair has become known as the ideal chair embodying the essence of modern Danish design.
The Frame of the CH24 is made of solid Wood, with a Seat surface of hand-woven paper cord in natural or black. Available in soaped, oiled or clear-lacquered beech, soaped, oiled, white-oiled, smoked-oiled, clear-lacquered or black-lacquered oak, soaped, white-oiled or black-lacquered ash, and oiled or clear-lacquered walnut. Beech is also available lacquered in colour in the nine CHS Soft Colors and the nine Ilse Crawford Soft Colors, each in gloss level 5 (soft); lacquered beech shows only minimal wood grain. Oak and ash retain a clearly visible wood grain even when lacquered and are only available in colour in black (NCS S9000-N, gloss level 20). As an accessory, Carl Hansen & Søn offers a matching Seat cushion in pigmented Loke leather in colours 7050, 7150 and 7748.
