Minimalist and honest, yet elegant and delicate: the 118 is a classic wooden chair that lends subtle elegance to any dining table or restaurant. The principle of reducing a chair to as few components as possible was already introduced by Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century. The 118 chair is a further development that honours the company's heritage – and goes a step further still. Sebastian Herkner adds refined details that make the design less dominant and, in turn, more refined. Another distinctive feature is the shape of the legs: rounded on the outside, straight on the inside – a form that echoes the horseshoe-shaped base of the seat. The one-piece bent seat frame and the hand-worked, cane-covered seat surface both reference the original Thonet bentwood chair, the 214. The programme is extended by the 118 H bar stool. The 118 FV model completes the seating family as a comfortable, inviting armchair. It is more generous and even more comfortable: with a larger seat surface and a wider backrest set at a slightly greater recline, it was conceived by Sebastian Herkner for fine dining.
The THONET 118 F armchair has a solid wood frame in beech and is available in three seat versions: with a hand-woven cane seat (118 F), with a moulded plywood shell seat (118 MF), or with a mirror-upholstered seat (118 SPF). The wood is available in six stain shades, and for 118 F and 118 SPF also in six high-gloss lacquers at an additional cost. The cane weave is available in natural and in DARK MELANGE. Without armrests, the model is called 118.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – precisely the surface you sit and lean against. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and delicate while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Shell seat: The shell seat is a seat surface made of moulded plywood that is slightly recessed towards the centre rather than flat. This means you sit somewhat within the surface rather than merely on it: weight is distributed more evenly, and you don't slide forward. More comfortable than a flat wooden board – and entirely without padding. This is denoted by the "M" in the model name, for example in 214 M or 118 M.
