As experts in high-quality beds and furniture, we know that choosing the right bed is not just about style. It is about comfort, functionality, materials and, ultimately, efficient use of space. In this article, we give you practical tips and tricks to help you make the perfect decision. We also present some of the best beds from Ethnicraft, Gervasoni, More, Interlübke, Signet and Zanotta that you can find with us.

Choosing the right bed size for your bedroom

The size of the bed is crucial for making the best use of the room while leaving enough space for a restful night. To make sure the bed fits well in your bedroom, there is a simple rule of thumb: Leave at least 70 cm of clearance on each side around the bed. This leaves enough space for other furniture and everyday use of the room.

Villa Schmidt tip: Measure the room and draw up a scale plan. That way you can see in advance how much space the bed will take up and whether it will dominate the room.

The best beds for small bedrooms

In small rooms, efficient use of space matters. Functional beds or beds with integrated storage can be especially helpful here.

  • Ethnicraft offers modern solid-wood beds in a minimalist design that fit stylistically perfectly into Bedroom fit rooms where other solid wood furniture already stands, or in this case where space is limited, as the double beds are available in 160 x 80 and the single beds in 90 x 200.
  • Gervasoni scores with a simple, natural look – ideal for small, stylish rooms where the bed should not draw too much attention yet still deliver on comfort. Where space is especially limited, the Sofa beds from Gervasoni a particularly efficient seating and sleeping solution.

Villa Schmidt tip: In small bedrooms, choose a bed without a tall headboard, as this can make the room appear smaller. A low headboard – or none at all – creates a more open feeling of space.

Platform beds vs. box-spring beds: which is better?

Platform beds and box-spring beds differ in both appearance and construction. While platform beds represent the standard bed as we generally know it – consisting of a frame with a slatted base and a mattress laid on top, and usually lower – box-spring beds offer additional comfort through a sprung mattress and a layered construction of usually 2-3 layers: frame, lower and upper mattress and an optional topper. The multiple layers also make a box-spring bed generally higher, which distinguishes it from a platform bed.

  • The SOVA platform bed by More stands out for its slender design and the use of high-quality materials such as oak or walnut, along with plant-based down for optimal comfort. SOVA offers a stable base that guarantees a long service life.
  • Signet offers, among others, with the model BENAZIR particularly high-quality box-spring beds that offer luxurious sleeping comfort and impress with their elegant design. Ideal for anyone looking for a durable bed with a solid spruce frame.

Villa Schmidt tip: If you are placing a box-spring bed in a room with a low ceiling, opt for models with a flatter mattress so as not to visually overwhelm the space.

Upholstered beds vs. wooden beds

The choice of material plays a decisive role in the look and feel of a bed, though less so in its comfort, which comes from the mattress, pillows and blankets. Upholstered beds are soft and inviting all over, while wooden beds lend the bedroom a rustic charm. We have added a few impressions of possible interior styling:

Tips and tricks for choosing the perfect bed

As bed specialists, we recommend always considering your personal needs and the available space when choosing the right model. Measure the room precisely and choose a bed that suits not only your style but also your sleeping habits.

Basic principles of bed orientation in feng shui

In feng shui, the millennia-old Chinese practice of harmonising living spaces, the orientation of the bed plays a central role, as the bedroom is considered the most important place of rest, recovery and regeneration. According to feng shui, the placement and orientation of the bed have a direct influence on the flow of energy (chi) and thus on sleep and wellbeing.

Feng shui tips on bed orientation:

  1. The bed should have a solid wall behind it: A solid wall behind the headboard symbolises stability and security. This gives the sleeper a feeling of safety and shelter. A free-standing bed in the middle of the room, or one with a door or window behind the headboard, is considered unfavourable, as it makes the chi unstable and can lead to restless sleep.
  2. No direct orientation towards the door: The bed should not face the door directly, especially not with the foot end pointing towards the door. In feng shui this position is known as the "death position" (also called the "coffin position") and is said to encourage unhealthy energies. Instead, the bed should be positioned so that you can see the door from the bed without pointing directly at it.
  3. Avoid windows behind the bed: Windows behind the head of the bed weaken the flow of energy and symbolise a lack of protection. If a window cannot be avoided, heavy curtains should be used to shield the room and stabilise the energy.
  4. A good balance between yin and yang: The bedroom should offer a calm, relaxed atmosphere in which yin (calm, gentleness) predominates. Too many electronic devices, mirrors or bright, strong colours bring an excess of yang energy (active energy), which can disturb sleep. Mirrors facing the bed directly are considered particularly unfavourable, as they reflect energy and can interrupt sleep.
  5. Orientation to the points of the compass: In Feng Shui the compass directions play an important role, but the ideal orientation varies from person to person. Here are some general guidelines:
  • Head pointing north: this is considered particularly calming, as it creates a connection to the earth's energy and promotes good, deep sleep.
  • Head to the east: this orientation is considered more energising and growth-promoting, ideal for young people or those who want more vitality in their lives.
  • Head to the south or west: these directions can bring relaxation and contentment, though they are interpreted differently depending on personality.

A few additional tips:

  • For small bedrooms, functional beds with storage are unbeatable.
  • Depending on ceiling height, choose a higher or lower bed so as not to upset the proportions of the room.
  • Choose elements already present in the room, e.g. wardrobes, bedside tables or chests of drawers (by brand, material, colour).

With these tips and the high-quality beds from Ethnicraft, Gervasoni, More, Interlübke, Signet and Zanotta you are guaranteed to make the right choice for your bedroom.
