The consistent extension of the Ayabi Chair: with the same design clarity, the Ayabi Barstool broadens the characteristic language of form to new applications. Three-dimensionality becomes an experience here: filigree lightness, mathematically precise lines and, at the same time, astonishing stability. Softly flowing lines meet an exactly defined geometry.
In developing the Ayabi, the particular challenge was to work out the perfect shape and realise it with craft precision. The construction of the wire-mesh chair follows organic lines, in which every point is defined and every line is built on mathematically precise positions.
Like a crown, the bespoke leather strips nestle against the contour of the chair. Particular attention was paid to its unique appearance: inserting the saddle-leather sections into the wire structure creates the Ayabi's iconic character. The leather inserts were inspired by the wooden deck planks of luxury yachts.
The corrosion-resistant hybrid chair is designed for both indoor and outdoor use.
The design was created in collaboration with Dai Sugasawa. The Japanese-born designer uses nature as a structural inspiration for his designs, which are both functional and emotionally engaging. The Ayabi Chair is the result of a five-year development process.

Note: leather hides are selected by specialists according to strict specifications and high inspection standards. Leather naturally has soft and firm sections of hide, which may also be processed side by side. It stretches through body heat and moisture during use, which to some extent produces waves and creases (so-called seating hollows). Favourite seats show this particularly clearly. This adjustment process is largely complete after a few weeks; further stretching is minimal and inconspicuous. Depending on the tanning method, dyeing and surface treatment, leather initially has a typical odour, which noticeably subsides over a few weeks; airing the piece can speed this up. Walter Knoll uses several hides for one upholstered set. No hide is identical to another. Insect bites, small injuries from fences or marks from fighting leave small scars on the cattle hide, which you may rediscover in the leather. Fattening folds are a sign of the animal's health and good nutrition. These material-typical characteristics do not impair the quality of the leather furniture. Differences in sheen, colour and texture within a single hide and between the cut pieces of a cover are likewise characteristic and typical of leather furniture.
