Building on the archetype of the minimalist sofa with a base of bent tubular steel, which first became part of the Thonet portfolio in the 1930s, designer James Irvine developed a versatile, adaptable furniture system in 2006. The S 5000 sofa programme is based on a simple, intelligent modular construction principle. Inspired by the increasing merging of work and living areas, it was intelligently developed further in 2020 by Studio Irvine, in keeping with the vision of its founder James Irvine, so that it fits the modern context of New Work: identical armrests and backrests, or partition panels for visual and acoustic screening, can be integrated into the seat frame as required. This makes it extensively expandable, and thanks to variable side panels it also finds its place in multi-space office concepts. The panels form the frame for various cushions that are simply laid on top. Add-on tables can also be fitted, connected to the sofa's tubular steel frame. In this way, entire sofa landscapes can be created that are modular, expandable and reconfigurable. The S 5000 therefore suits modern living environments as a classic sofa; in its smaller version with panels it works as a smart-working station in the home office, and as a larger variant it suits areas such as central zones or lounges in office contexts, co-working spaces or waiting halls. The programme is extended by variants with castors.
The THONET S 5002 two-seater is a pre-configured combination from the modular S 5000 sofa programme: a tubular steel seat frame into which identical armrests and backrests are hung. In the version with low armrests, two low and two high upholstered elements sit in the frame; in the fully high version, four high upholstered elements. Both are available with castors as an option. The frame is chrome-plated or black, and the upholstery is comfort upholstery. Glides in plastic or felt are available for an additional charge.

Comfort upholstery: Comfort upholstery is a particularly elaborate upholstery construction: depending on the model, a fine non-woven layer is additionally sewn in. This makes the cushion feel softer to sit on and, at the same time, more durable, as the cover is loaded more evenly.
