The bentwood technique perfected by Michael Thonet was one of the sources of inspiration for Marcel Breuer's experiments with bent tubular steel. This idea led to the four-part nesting table set B 9. The small tables can be used in many ways – as a side table in seating groups, as a practical surface, or as the perfect spot for a vase of fresh flowers. After use, they can be pushed together to save space. The distinctive feature of this programme is its functional simplicity – the nesting tables consist only of chrome-plated, bent tubular steel and rectangular tops. During his time at the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer experimented with steel and tubular steel, a material that was new and promising for furniture at the time. Close collaboration with the aircraft manufacturer Junkers in Dessau accelerated the development process. Among his first designs were the B 9 nesting tables as well as various shelves and side furniture. The complete range was already included in the Thonet card catalogue of 1930/31. Breuer originally designed the B 9 nesting tables for the canteen of the Bauhaus building in Dessau. The versatile little tables were also used in the student apartments and the Masters' Houses of Walter Gropius.
The B 9 is available in four sizes, which can be pushed together to save space: 45 x 39 x 45 cm (B 9 a), 52 x 39 x 50 cm (B 9 b), 59 x 39 x 55 cm (B 9 c) and 66 x 39 x 60 cm (B 9 d). All four stand on a frame made of 20 mm tubular steel and carry a 20 mm thick top made of MDF, glass or three-layer solid wood. As standard, the frame is chrome-plated and the top is finished in beech or glass. For an additional charge, the frame is available powder-coated and the top in ash, oiled oak or oiled walnut, as well as with a top coat finish. As standard, the tables come without glides; plastic or felt glides and the ThonetClip® cable clip are available for an additional charge.
