Cubic shape, clear form, fine proportions, a flexing motion: the evolutionarily perfected cantilever chairs S 33 and S 34, among the first of their kind, unite contemporary spirit with an awareness of tradition. "Why four legs, when two will do", wrote the artist Kurt Schwitters in 1927 on seeing the first cantilever chairs in furniture history. The two chairs S 33 and S 34 caused a stir at the Werkbund exhibition that opened in 1927 at the Weissenhof estate in Stuttgart. From 1925, Mart Stam had experimented with thin gas pipes, initially joining their angles with flanges of the kind used by plumbers. As a further development, Stam created the principle of freely cantilevered chairs that no longer rested on four legs — a construction principle whose formal restraint became an important building block in the history of modern furniture design. His cantilever chairs S 33 and S 34 were more than just functionally designed items of furniture; they belonged to the revolutionary overall concept of a new outlook on architecture and life.
The THONET S 34 cantilever chair is the version with armrests. Its chrome-plated tubular steel frame carries the seat and back in three coverings: full-grain leather, which can be re-tensioned via tensioning brackets under the seat (S 34); fabric (S 34 V); or plastic mesh (S 34 N). The armrests are made of beech on the leather and fabric versions, and of elastomer plastic as standard on the S 34 N. The frame is available powder-coated for an additional charge. Without armrests, the model is called the S 33. For outdoor use, there is the S 34 N with the Thonet Protect frame; the matching cushion pad is the S 33 PA.

Elastomer plastic: elastomers are plastics that retain their shape but yield slightly under pressure. Thonet uses them for the armrests: they feel pleasantly warm to the touch — unlike bare metal — give a little when leant on, and are very resistant to everyday use.
