The famous coffee house chair is an icon and is still regarded as the most successful industrial product in the world: it marked the beginning of the history of modern furniture. The basis was a new technique, the bending of solid wood, which Michael Thonet perfected in the 1850s, making series production possible in the first place. There was also a brilliant distribution idea: 36 disassembled chairs were packed into a crate measuring one cubic metre, shipped around the world and assembled on site. With its clear, reduced aesthetic, this classic has found its place in the most varied of settings for over 150 years.
The THONET 214 bentwood chair stands on a four-legged frame made of bent beech wood and is available in three versions: with a hand-woven cane weave seat (214), with a moulded plywood shell seat (214 M) or with a partially upholstered seat (214 P). The wood is finished in Beech I; further stain tones are available at extra cost. The cane weave is available in natural or in DARK MELANGE; the upholstered seat is covered in fabric or leather. Plastic glides are included, felt glides available at extra cost.
Sustainability: the wood for the 214 comes from sustainable forestry. Thanks to its high quality and timeless aesthetic, it is also extremely durable – repairs are easy to carry out. All these aspects convinced the jury of the German Sustainability Design Award, which named THONET's success story – a model that has outlasted every fashion and trend for more than 160 years – the winner in 2021.

Partial upholstery: With partial upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – precisely the area where you sit and lean back. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while noticeably improving seating comfort.
Moulded seat: The moulded seat is a seat surface made of moulded plywood that is slightly recessed towards the centre rather than flat. This means you sit somewhat within the surface rather than just on top of it: weight is distributed more evenly, and you don't slide forward. More comfortable than a flat wooden board – and entirely without padding. This is denoted by the "M" in the model name, for example in 214 M or 118 M.
