Minimalist and honest, yet elegant and delicate: the 118 is a classic wooden chair that lends subtle elegance to any dining table or restaurant. The principle of reducing a chair to as few components as possible was introduced by Michael Thonet back in the mid-19th century. The 118 chair is a further development that honours the company's heritage – and takes it a step further. Sebastian Herkner adds refined details that make the design less dominant, yet more distinguished. Another special feature is the shape of the chair legs: rounded on the outside, straight on the inside – a form that follows the horseshoe-shaped base of the seat. The seat frame, bent from a single piece, and the hand-worked, cane-woven seat surface reference the original Thonet bentwood chair, the 214. The programme is extended by the 118 H bar stool. The 118 FV model completes the seating family as a comfortable, inviting armchair. It is more generous and even more comfortable: with a larger seat surface and a wider, slightly more reclined backrest, it was designed by Sebastian Herkner for fine dining.
The THONET 118 wooden chair has a solid beech frame and is available in three seat versions: with a hand-woven cane seat (118), with a moulded plywood shell seat (118 M), or with a mirror-upholstered seat (118 SP). The wood is available in six stain shades, and for the 118 and 118 SP also in six high-gloss finishes at an extra charge. The cane weave is available in natural and in DARK MELANGE. Plastic glides are included; felt glides are available at an extra charge.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inside is upholstered – exactly the surface you sit and lean on. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and delicate while noticeably improving seating comfort.
Shell seat: The shell seat is a seat surface made of moulded plywood, slightly recessed towards the centre rather than flat. This means you sit somewhat within the surface rather than just on it: weight is distributed better, and you don't slide forward. More comfortable than a flat wooden board – and entirely without padding. This is denoted by the "M" in the model name, for example in the 214 M or 118 M.
