Simplicity that has an effect everywhere: Mart Stam took the back legs away from a chair that had been shaped along similar principles for centuries. Through evolutionary refinement, this produced a piece of seating furniture that cuts a good figure anywhere understatement and quality are called for. In his furniture designs, Mart Stam was concerned with high utility and economy, both aesthetically and materially. This resulted in the clean-lined shape, the clear construction and improved seating comfort. Stam achieved the greatest possible reduction in the cantilever chair S 43 by combining the tubular steel frame with moulded wood parts for the seat and back. Its pure, restrained shape makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism. The artistic copyright for the strictly cubic, legless-at-the-back chair now lies with Thonet. The Natural Sciences reading room of the German National Library in Leipzig was already furnished with the cantilever chair S 43 in 1933. More than 70 years later, Thonet supplied new S 43 chairs to complete the set. Only high-quality tubular steel furniture of the kind typical of Thonet is this durable and sustainable. The range is extended by the swivel chair variants S 43 Atelier (DR), the bar stools S 43 H and the children's chairs S 43 K.
The cantilever chair THONET S 43 ST has a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with a seat and back in moulded plywood, and is stackable. It is available unupholstered (S 43 ST) and with mirror upholstery (S 43 PVST). The moulded wood parts are available for a surcharge in further stain shades, in oak or with an opaque lacquer finish. The range also includes the swivel chair variants S 43 Atelier, the bar stools S 43 H and the children's chair S 43 K.

Mirror upholstery
With mirror upholstery, only the inner side is upholstered – exactly the area where you sit and lean back. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Row connection
Chairs that can be joined in rows can be connected to one another side by side without tools to form fixed rows of seating. This is required wherever large numbers of people sit together: in halls, churches, canteens or conference rooms. The Thonet connector is patented and meets the DIN EN 14703 standard for row seating, including panic release – in an emergency, the row can be cleared quickly and safely.
