Simplicity that makes its mark everywhere: Mart Stam took the back legs away from a chair shape that had been formed on similar principles for centuries. Evolutionary refinement turned this into a seating piece that cuts a good figure anywhere understatement and quality are called for. In his furniture designs, Mart Stam valued high utility and economy, both aesthetically and materially. The result is a straightforward shape, a clear construction and improved seating comfort. Stam achieved maximum reduction in the S 43 cantilever chair by combining a tubular steel frame with moulded wood parts for the seat and back. Its pure, restrained shape makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism. The artistic copyright for the strictly cubic, back-leg-less chair now lies with Thonet. The Natural Sciences reading room of the German National Library in Leipzig was already fitted with the S 43 cantilever chair in 1933. More than 70 years later, Thonet supplied new S 43 chairs to complement them. Only high-quality tubular steel furniture, as is typical for Thonet, is this durable and sustainable. The range is extended by the S 43 Atelier (DR) swivel chair variants, the S 43 H bar stool and the S 43 K children's chair.
The THONET S 43 cantilever chair consists of a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with a seat and back in moulded plywood. It is available unupholstered (S 43) and with mirror upholstery (S 43 PV). The moulded wood parts are available for an additional charge in further stain shades, in oak, or with an opaque lacquer finish. The range also includes the S 43 Atelier swivel chair variants, the S 43 H bar stool and the S 43 K children's chair.

Mirror upholstery: With mirror upholstery, only the inner side is upholstered – precisely the area where you sit and lean back. The back of the seat shell remains visible in wood or plastic. This keeps the chair light and slender while still noticeably improving seating comfort.
Row connection: Chairs designed for rows can be joined side by side into fixed chair rows without tools. This is required wherever many people sit together: in halls, churches, canteens or conference rooms. The Thonet connector is patented and meets the DIN EN 14703 standard for row seating, including panic-release safety – in an emergency, the row can be cleared quickly and safely.
